	BLAND COUNTY VA’S FALLEN HEROES   This book was prepared by BCHS in 2017 about Bland County’s Fallen Heroes.  These heroes include men who died while wearing our nation’s uniform during the conflicts from World War I through the Gulf Wars. We have collected the names from several lists: the Library of Virginia, the History of Bland County, and the National Archives. 	"Mark Hager Short Stories" Collected by Ann Hardy Beardshall & Mark Hager III Mark Hager (1889-1960) was a native of Bland County and a prolific short story writer. In her preface Ann notes that "Mark Hager wrote over 250 short stories that appeared in a wide range of publications including Collier's, Progressive Farmer, Household, The American Legion Magazine, and Woman's Day." 	This book provides a history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the CCC Camp at Bastian. It covers the history of the CCC, how the camps were set up, how they operated, and what they accomplished during the 9 years in Bastian. Special attention was given to describe Bastian's Camp Cherokee. There is also a description of the work projects completed in Bland County during those years. 	John Harvey and Minnie Catherine Wright Miller with their oldest child Edgar Lorenzo Miller (standing center), David Stafford (center sitting, who was the father of Dr. David Miller II), and their sister, Stella (sitting in her mother's lap). Photo taken about 1899. 	Life Along Walker Creek, A Story About Sarah Jane Mustard Byrnes During the Year 1862-1865 by Robert Hetherington. This historical novel has just been published, and is available exclusively at the Society gift shop. Sarah Jane Mustard Byrnes was the great-great grandmother of Bob Hetherington. Sarah’s life was greatly impacted by the Civil War, and her life story represented countless others, regardless of their side in the conflict. This soft cover book, containing 134 pages, is dedicated to the memory of Hetherington’s wife, Judith “Judy” Lynn Shoulars Hetherington (1947-2010), with whom he shared forty-one great years of marriage.
